Composer Charlie Smalls and playwright William F. Brown’s Afro-American retelling of L. Frank Baum’s children’s novel ‘The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz’ quickly became a theatrical hit - a stage sensation that redefined the term ‘showstopper’. THE WIZ made its stage debut in 1974 in Baltimore, after which it moved to the Majestic Theatre on Broadway where it ran for four years of sold-out performances.
