BACKGROUND
The Lion King originated as a Disney animated film and premiered in 1994. The film featured music from Elton John and Tim Rice and went on to become a successful movie franchise. The stage production followed three years later with the trial run held at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. The musical, staged by Disney Theatrical Production, translated the film to stage but with a plethora of modifications, including bringing in additional music and lyrics from multi award winning composer Hans Zimmer, Grammy winning producer Jay Rifkin, and Grammy winning composers Lebo M. and Mark Mancino. The book is written by Roger Allers and Irene Mechi, who were also the original showmakers of the Lion King film.
This production is led by director Julie Taymor, who also spearheaded creative production and costume design. Taymor was the visionary that brought this musical to light. With her creativity and innovation in terms of visuals and puppetry, the musical became a trailblazing epic that moved stagecraft to a whole new level. Since its premiere on Broadway in 1997, the musical continues to conquer the district, becoming the second longest ongoing Broadway musical.
The Lion King is deemed the most outstanding Broadway musical in history. It’s no exaggeration, the production has grossed over $1.3 billion and has been attended by 127 million people. The musical has become the highest grossing Broadway musical ever spanning across 29 global productions.
