Let’s cut to the chase: Charlie Smalls and William F. Brown’s disco and motown-infused smash-hit musical THE WIZ is quite iconic. It’s incredible score is on a rousing display, right on the forefront; it’s an electrifying, family-oriented piece of 24 karat theatre gold stuffed to the brim with humor and personality; it’s a five decade-old gem oozing with eye-popping sets, phenomenal hand-sewn costumes, outstanding choreography, and it’s hitting the stage once more, ready to blow it right out of the water!
Composer Charlie Smalls and playwright William F. Brown’s Afro-American adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s children’s novel ‘The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz’ is a magical, inclusive stage sensation that connects to the original disco and motown sounds of the 1970s. THE WIZ exploded onto the musical scene in a puff of smoke in 1974 in Baltimore, after which it moved to the Majestic Theatre on Broadway where it ran for a mind-blowing 1,672 performances. THE WIZ really knocked Broadway off its axis and received no less than seven Tony Awards, five Drama Desk Awards, and two Theatre World Awards.
